AN INTERVIEW WITH TEMPLETON RYE MASTER DISTILLER LESTER BROWN

GET A TASTE OF PERFECTION
I’ve had the opportunity to taste several hundred barrels of rye whiskey of various ages. On occasion, I have come across a barrel that I would describe as “my ideal rye whiskey” – this is one of those barrels.
My belief is that a solid rye whiskey should have a slightly sweet floral and fruity nose. The taste should be bold and almost chewy. The spiciness of the rye has to shine in a smooth and subtle way. The finish has to be long journey through spicy, sweet, vanilla, semi-sweet chocolate and sometimes nutty. The best way to understand is to take a sip!
THE MASTER DISTILLER’S JOURNEY
I am a chemical engineer who has spent years distilling various liquids including crude oil, ethanol and whiskey. I joined the Templeton team in 2015 with the intent to help build, startup and run a new distillery. The distillery ground was broke in 2017 and we were up and running in 2018. I am currently the Master Distiller and Master Blender. I’m responsible to ensure all raw goods through to final products meet or exceed the standards we have set.
